Seven companies and fishermen's associations from the lobster industries in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island recently returned from a two-week trade mission that is part of an 18-month market development strategy to promote frozen lobster products to China. Industry and government representatives took part in meetings with key Chinese seafood buyers, and participated in the China Fisheries and Seafood Expo, the largest seafood show in Asia. Local Governments are investing to increase exports of frozen seafood products to China, which could potentially have a huge impact on the industry here. Industry partners involved include pecheries GEM Ltd.; LA Trading Inc.; Maritime Fishermen’s Union; Moncton Fish Market; Connor Brothers Ltd.; Ocean Pride Fisheries Ltd.; and Mariner Seafood Inc.
“China represents major opportunities for the Atlantic Canadian lobster industry, and I am pleased that government and industry are working together in this way to pursue those opportunities," said P.E.I. Minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Neil LeClair. "Expanding markets for lobster products is key to the strength and stability of the industry."
The timing couldn’t be better for the return of Fish Canada / Workboat Canada at the Moncton Coliseum. This is the largest commercial marine show in the country. March 18th-20th marks the return of the must attend industry event for those who make their living on the water or provide the services to those who do.
Exhibitor excitement is building and booth space is moving quickly for the event, which promises to bring visitors the most comprehensive group of marine and commercial fisheries products assembled for 2010 in Eastern Canada, including: fishing boats, design and construction, safety equipment, engines and electronics, rescue craft, harvesting and processing equipment, as well as a vast array of industry services.
